Food matching

Wine is a natural partner to food and the flavours in wine have
traditionally been used to complement food flavours. Food and wine
matching needn't be complicated - simply look for characteristics in your
wine to match those in your dishes. When you get it right, the results can
really be amazing for the customer and your tills!

Find out which wines are best matched with which foods below:

Red meat

Red meat and red wine work really well because the meat softens the tannins in the red wine making the wine taste smoother.

Our recommendation for beef:
  • Hardys VR Shiraz
  • Echo Falls Merlot

Our recommendation for lamb:
  • Hardys Nottage Hill Shiraz
  • Jack Rabbit Merlot

White meat

Chicken has a fairly delicate flavour and the best wine match depends on how it'’s cooked and served. For grilled chicken and salads select a simple white.

Our recommendation for pork or veal:
  • Hardys VR Chardonnay
  • Stowells Chenin Blanc

Our recommendation for poultry:

  • Hardys Nottage Hill Chardonnay
  • Stowells Colombard Sauvignon

Fish

Generally fish is best paired with white wine due to its delicate flavour, but this wine depends on the type of fish and the way it'’s cooked.

Grilled white fish need crisp, zesty wines. Meatier fish like salmon, or fish dishes with creamy sauces need a richer wine.

Our recommendation for fish:

  • Nobilo Regional Collection Sauvignon Blanc
  • Hardys VR Chardonnay

Pasta and pizza

The Italians are passionate about food and wine matching, and many of their dishes have a very specific match.

Our recommendation for pasta and pizza:
  • Match tomato based pasta sauces and plain pizza with dry whites such as Stowells Italian Pinot Grigio.
  • Creamy, rich dishes such as spaghetti carbonara are delicious with crisp wines like Echo Falls Chardonnay.

Seafood

Wine regions close to the sea normally produce the best wine for seafood. A light and delicate white with fresh zesty flavours will enhance all your seafood dishes.

Our recommendation for seafood:
  • Nobilo Regional Collection Sauvignon Blanc
  • Hardys VR Chardonnay

Spicy food

A touch of sweetness and plenty of fruity flavours will counteract the heat in spicy food.

Our recommendation for Mexican:
  • Echo Falls Rosé
  • Hardys VR Merlot

Our recommendation for curry:
  • Hardys VR Merlot
  • Stowells Chenin Blanc

Cheese

Wine and cheese make classic partners, but the type of cheese very much affects the choice of wine.

Our recommendation for cheese:
  • Strong, hard cheeses like cheddar need a rich red with bags of fruit like Hardys VR Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • White-rind cheeses like brie and goat’s cheese are great with wines like Stowells Chilean Sauvignon Blanc.

Dessert

The key is to find a wine that is as sweet or sweeter than your dessert.

Our recommendation for dessert:
  • Echo falls White Zinfandel
  • Stowells German Liebfraumilch
